Do I need administrative powers on my Windows XP profile to install and play Guild Wars: Factions?

Oh, no, I'm just asking before my friend gets it for me for my birthday. My parents are against online games.

My father has rid me of my administrative privilages due to Limewiire and the fact that it got viruses on my comp. He blames it on several programs, all of which I installed. He can't prove it, of course.

I'm going to say this right now, if you parents have said don't install anything without their permission, I HIGHLY recommend listening to them, whether or not you think it's fair. You could quite easily find yourself with the computer taken away, sold, moved to a public location, etc.

Depending on how your admin system is set up, yes you will need the admin's password to install ANYTHING[if your wondering about extracting stuff from archives, it's not the same]. But if the game is already installed, and your just adding factions to your account, your not installing the game again, just getting access to other files

If your computer has viruses, why would you want to buy/play GW on it? Most likely the viruses will either invite others or send your account/password to someone else. You should be 100% sure the computer is completely free from everything before you even consider putting it back online...

...and you should be very aware of that as well.

If your parents know half a thing about computers, checking if you've installed a game is easily detected, monitoring your internet traffic is easy and they can even use remote desktop to see what you use the computer for while they're not standing behind you.

yes yes...my parents used to be like that as well. I don't think quite as harsh mind you. It's probably just due to new technology that they don't fully understand - and it kind of makes me bitter when I hear parents doing things like this, probably because they don't like the fact that this is the sort of thing that their children know more about than they do. Just you wait, in 40 years you'll be telling your children to walk to school because "teleportation rots the brain"!

I agree with others though, you NEED their blessing rather than going against their wishes. It will only turn out badly in the end.

Who cares if takes admin privileges? Just take them back. It's not exactly rocket-science....

Trust me, it's rocket science. My father has a 30-some character password with numbers. If I tried to watch him type it, it'd be obvious.

Log in as "System" and give yourself admin. I'm sure you can figure it out from there.
